BNSF Pays Tribute to Military Families on "Holiday Express"
2008-12-08
BNSF is hoping that a series of special “Holiday Express” train rides for military personnel and their families will make the season a bit brighter.
More than 1,800 members of military families in Wyoming, South Dakota, North Dakota and Montana are expected to take a ride on the “Holiday Express.” The first train ride was on Friday, Dec. 5, in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Holiday Express is a unique vintage passenger train decorated for the holidays. Passengers are treated to special holiday snacks, given a commemorative holiday ornament and visited by Santa.
In addition to Santa, other special guests include Montana’s Gov. Brian Schweitzer and South Dakota’s Lt. Gov. Dennis Daugaard as well as attorneys general, mayors and other state officials. High-ranking military officials as well as representatives of organizations receiving checks also are part of the festivities. In all, BNSF is contributing more than $40,000 to organizations that offer support to military families in these states. Checks are being presented as part of the overall event.
BNSF’s association with the military dates back to the Civil War. Today’s Team BNSF includes many veterans, and many BNSF employees have been called to active military service. Since Sept. 11, 2001, more than 600 BNSF employees have been called to active duty.
