BNSF Marathon Team Wins White Rock Marathon

We always say that velocity is more than the speed at which a train goes. However, on Sun., Dec. 13, at the White Rock Marathon in Dallas, velocity was all about speed.

The BNSF Velocity men's marathon team ran the 26.2 miles in a time of 2:43:56, giving the team its second win in three years in the Southern Methodist University Corporate Relay Challenge that is part of the marathon. Team members Mark Schulze, vice president, Safety, Training and Operations Support; Doug Hinds, assistant general tax counsel; Coby Bullard, director, Sales; Ricky Stover, manager, Sales; and Mike Brown, general director, Benefits, have run the race as a team for three years.

Relay sponsors made a $5,000 donation to the charity of the team's choice, Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, in the team's name. The BNSF Foundation will match the gift.

"Our goal was to get the [relay] trophy back to BNSF and get that donation made in BNSF's name to the Scottish Rite Hospital," Hinds said. "This was our way to demonstrate how we truly care about the communities and people where BNSF operates."

Denise Kramer, manager, Employee and Organization Development, also ran in a women's marathon relay team with four non-BNSF people. Her team, FWRun, finished in 5:12:08.

Jim Nadalini, senior manager, Service Design, ran the marathon with a time of 3:00:14, placing 49^th overall out of 4,445 marathon finishers and also qualifying him for the elite Boston Marathon. This was his ninth marathon and seventh White Rock race.

Amy Lucio, senior manager, Service Design, ran the marathon with a time of 4:28:36. This was her 15^th marathon. Lucio used the event as a training run for a 50-mile race in March 2010.

For Leela Hattarki, consulting systems developer, this was her ninth marathon and third White Rock race. She finished with a time of 5:35:28.

BNSF also had a fantastic showing of many half-marathon runners, with some running their first half marathon.
